Oh God I'm Gay: Drew Phoenix

On the second episode of AfterEllen.com's newest limited series video blog Oh God I'm Gay, Drew Phoenix talks about his experience as a transgender pastor at a United Methodist Church.

Drew discusses details on a convention where he'll be dealing with protests and petitions from those who are strongly opposed to transgender people being part of the church.

Oh God I'm Gay: Episode 2

Check back next week for another episode of OGIG with a new guest.

You are a blessing!

Thanks, Drew, for sharing your life and your message with us. While it is difficult to hear that the LGBT community has been fractured by transgender issues, I am happy to witness your courage, your faith and your light toward healing. You are truly blessed, and a blessing to us all. Keep the faith!

interesting points

Though I no longer consider myself "religious" I found this discussion very interesting. Last week I explained to a group of friends that my parents are CME which at one time translated to Colored Methodist Episcopal and now is Christian Methodist Episcopal.

The question on why lesbians would be upset to learn that their female friend is now transitioning most likely stems from a feeling of betrayal. The "bonds" of the friendship is being broken if one friend is no longer a "lesbian." And though I don't feel this would be a concern of mine, I think the transgender friend is then alienated. Gosh, this makes great discussion. I hope to see more vlogging on this topic.

I agree with your statement, mythofthefront.

update since this video was filmed

Fortunately, a majority of the delegates at General Conference 2008 voted not to ban transgender clergy from being ordained or appointed to serve as pastors, so Rev. Phoenix is able to continue in ministry with his congregation.

How Well Spoken!

What a great ambassador for the transgender community. I look forward to more vlogs on this subject. I too am curious why our community has such a hard time with transgender people. When people discuss Max on The L Word many times it is NOT with affection. Why is this? We should strive to be inclusive of all people.

Thanks for this

It's really inspiring. As someone who's no longer religious but was brought up Catholic (no women, no gays, no nothing) in a very conservative country, it's fantastic to know that there are other Christian denominations out there that are so accepting. I believe strongly that even while gays and lesbians are getting more acceptance across the world, transgender issues are something that needs to be talked about a lot more - people need to stop fearing these issues and start discussing it. Nothing good comes from sweeping things under the carpet.

So thanks once again for an excellent episode. It makes me glad that we're living in a world like this!
