Portia de Rossi wants your feet to be animal-free

Portia de Rossi and Ellen DeGeneres had a completely vegan wedding, so it's not a surprise that both women follow the diet themselves. Ellen is a more recent convert, and Portia told reporters at TCA last week that they've both changed a lot since they began dating:

When Ellen and I first got together I was wearing fur and Ellen was wearing very expensive Italian calfskin leather. She was giving me a hard time about wearing the fur and I said, ‘Why is a fox any more important than a cow?’ … We took that idea and went all the way with it. We are doing what we can.

Fashion being just as important to the women as what they eat, Portia is going to be launching didn't fare so well, I wonder how Portia's will be much different. I also wonder how she will have the time, considering she has a new TV show and is also (hopefully) going to be working on the Arrested Development movie in the near future. She's currently starring in the newly released film, Ambition to Meaning: Finding Your Life's Purpose.

So, do you think you will be wearing a pair of Portia's? Maybe she'll name the pumps after herself and a special sneaker line or other sensible shoes after her wifey.

Prices

I'd totally buy Portia's vegan footwear line if it is priced better than Natalie Portman's now defunct shoe line.  I am kind of convinced that's why NP's line didn't do so well. As a vegan, it's incredibly hard to find fashionable vegan shoes that don't look like wooden clogs or Crocs.  I'm always sleuthing around trying to see which shoes in department stores happen to be "accidentally vegan".  (By the way for the vegans out there, Zappos often has great vegan shoes)  Natalie's shoes were gorgeous but so expensive. Hopefully Portia's line will be nore realistically priced, I'm pretty sure most of the vegans out there are like me and don't want to spend 500 dollars on a pair of PVC shoes.  Especially with the economy the way it is now, can't see anyone justifying the purchase.  It's a shame too because I feel that making a really well made, good looking vegan shoe that is priced fairly could also cause people who normally buy leather to buy a vegan shoe, therefore not contributing to animal cruelty.

As a side note--Portia's new film "Ambition to Meaning" is great and very inspirational.  I had the opportunity to attend the premiere in New York recently and she has a great scene in it, so I encourage everyone to go see it--if anything it just makes you feel good and is uplifting.

Can't believe she used to wear fur

Though she is right. It is just as bad to wear leather. But foxes are cuter than cows.

I've been eating vegan the last couple of days just to try and cut down on the unhealthy things in my diet and enchourage myself to eat more fruit and veg. Its ok I'm appreciating fruit a lot more. But life without cheese is starting to grate on me(sorry for the awful pun). Also fish is really healthy so I feel like cutting it out of my diet is doing me no good. I eat a lot of beans already because fish is the only meat I eat. But without fish I'd be relying entirely on beans for my protein which is just too boring.

I am looking forward to seeing more of Portia and her gorgeous hair though.

Hey faith in buffy--I've

Hey faith in buffy--I've been vegan for about 4 years now and I can help you out!  You dont have to rely on beans for your protein, in fact , I hardly ever eat beans at all, and I don't eat a lot of soy either.  I've also never had a protein deficiency, and I get regular blood tests done--I always have a super clean bill of health and the doctors are always amazed at how good my bloodwork is.  There are many things out there that will give you your protein--for example, there are high protein grains out there like Kamut that usually give you better protein than you can get from a steak. Kamut isn't hard to find either, lots of pastas in Whole Foods or any health food store are made from Quinoa (also a high protein grain) and Kamut.  They taste just as good (I think they taste better) than regular pasta.   In fact some raw veggies contain more protein than a steak after its been cooked (cooking the food makes it lose enzymes and nutrients).  Don't get discouraged, it's a hard switch to make if you are switching from a meat eating diet (I at least transitioned from vegetarianism to veganism so it was bit easier).  I was like you, where I felt like I could never give up cheese.  But there are some really great cheese substitutes out there now.  I make enchiladas, nachos, pizza all with this vegan cheese and my meat/cheese eating friends love it.  It requires some experimentation but you can do it!  I"ve even been able to stay vegan when visiting my family in Latin America.

The internet is a great resource for vegans (so many websites with great, easy recipes and vegan blogs)  and I recommend getting some books on going vegetarian/vegan, it makes it easier.  If you need any help or suggestions feel free to message me, I"m happy to offer any advice from experience.  It's a bit of an adjustment at first, but when you realize all the good you are doing for the environment and that your money isn't contributing to suffering, you feel good about making the sacrifice.  Of course, I am a proponent of people doing what works best for them, so most important is to listen to your body and what it's telling you it needs.  For some vegans, that means eating organic cheese sometimes etc... (I'm pretty strict vegan, including all makeup and body products, clothes etc...) Again, listen to your body and do what works for you.

Hey :)  Here are some

Hey :)  Here are some sample vegan menus with plenty of protein, and there is a list of common foods that are good vegan sources of protein as well.  Don`t worry, you wouldn`t have to rely completely on beans.  http://www.vrg.org/nutrition/protein.htm

As far as beans go though, off the top of my head here are some ideas of ways to prepare them to make them interesting.

Hummus

Split pea soup

Black bean soup

Lentil soup

Dal

Baked beans

Beans and rice (can be made with a huge variety of spices and vegetables)

three bean salad

bean burgers

refried beans (plain, or on nachos, or in a burrito)

encheladas

white bean avocado wraps

Go vegan!

It's so hard to find cool, reasonably priced vegan clothes/shoes....sigh...

Good on Ellen and Portia for being outspoken vegans. Drives me nuts when self-professed animals lovers eat meat/ use animal-derived products.

(This is a very cool store, support it anyway you can. We need more of them! http://www.herbivoreclothing.com/)

Mooshoes.com

Mooshoes is a great vegan shoe store.  If you can't visit the location in NYC, you can always check out the site at mooshoes.com  They have bags, wallets, belts and other accessories as well.

I am glad they are living a

I am glad they are living a healthy lifestyle, and am huge fans of both Ellen and Portia, but P&G still uses animal testing and Ellen (as I'm sure people here know) is one of their models.

I know you can't fix the world, and nobody is perfect, etc., but taking money to promote their products, come on!

Ok, off to eat a burger and fries!:)

Leather

I only wear shoes made from reclaimed hides, i.e. roadkill. Is that so wrong? My raccoon slippers are both water repellent and positive for rabies. I get comfort and a bio-weapon all in one lounge footwear. Sometimes I think these Hollywood types take things to far.
