Retro Reviewing: "Bound"This week, the Retro Reviewers proudly present their take on Bound, the classic lesbian neo-noir thriller from 1996.
The Wachowski Brothers' (The Matrix Trilogy, V for Vendetta) first feature film, Bound made a huge splash on the lesbian scene at the time of it's release, and it's still beloved for its strong female characters, amazing love scenes, and twisty, edgy plot. Retro Reviewing: Bound Next week, the ladies have something very special planned, as they're enlisting the help of Good Asian Drivers, Melissa Li and Kit Yan, to review Saving Face. AE reader GustavChristoff has kindly transcribed the episode for our hearing impaired readers — read it here. Submitted by on September 13, 2008 - 9:00am. |

excellent, even for the squeamish
I, for the record, am a total wimp when it comes to violence in movies. But even i was able to stick it out through "Bound" because the movie is just that damn good. The only drawback i see in the film is having to listen to Violet. I have to admit that i was a little surprised nobody mentioned Jennifer Tilly's voice. Stylistically, i liked that she had an unrealistically high pitch around Caesar and the other men, but lowered it around Corky. However, it still got on my nerves.
You guys did wag a metaphorical finger for the stereotypically butch portrayal of Corky, but that was one of my favorite things in the entire movie. I absolutely loved it. They might've crossed the line if she had a mullet, but she didn't and everything else worked well. Her uberbutch was a perfect foil for Violet's uberfemme.
One last note: You guys kept going on about the sex scenes. Yeah, they were awesome, but my favorite scene is the one where they're in the elevator and they see each other for the first time. There's something about that scene that strikes a good chord in me. Maybe it's the way Corky checks out Violet's... assets. I dunno. But regardless of what it is, it works.
P.S. Can't wait to watch the "Saving Face" review.
The Wachoski Brothers
Looooooking Gooood Retro
Looooooking Gooood Retro LAdies.
Yea I heard rumours that Larry Wachowski was now Lana Wachowski. But I think those rumours were confirmed untrue. But who really knows right?
I watched Bound for the first time a few weeks ago. Before I watched it I thought I'd be in for a cheesy film. But I was wrong. I thought it was great. The plot was fantastic, the visuals were well done and intense, and the acting was well done. I have to admit I love action/mobster movies but the finger scenes and head smashing scenes had me squeamish. I'm not a huge fan of Jennfer Tilly. There's just something about her that annoys me but her and gershon did a great job. I'm with Rina where I can't decide if I should give it a 4.75 or a 5. But I'm going to give it a 4.875. Your reinactments were hilarious, especially Denae's at the end. Great job as always.
P.S. Saving face is one of my fav's, can't wait for your review. And Danielle, you're looking extra specially fine. As always.
Lana Wachowski
Somebody needs to take a big
I remember once watching
I remember once watching this film and realizing that I had only once seen the ending...I had seen the beginning many times but couldn't remember how it ended..
It is a great movie! Gina Gershon is the reason I am out today!
Ha ha!
I always enjoy your
I always enjoy your re-enactments :) I watched the movie last week and loved it.
I loved this movie
Love Bound
Excellent as always
Excellent as always guys. I agree with you, the film does have a modern feel to it and looks as though it could have been filmed recently. It's amazing to think that it is twelve years old. Great performances by the whole cast, and yes okay Gina Gershon's character was stereotypical in the way she looked, but actually, even though she was uberfemme, Jennifer Tilly's character was the stronger one and much more resourceful. Even in the sex scenes she made Corky look like a novice by taking control... in my opinion anyway! All in all great mainstream film, and lets face it, there arent many of those that could be given the 'Gay Magic' treatment, are there?!!
Looking foward to the extra special Saving Face review. Love that film!
By the way, off topic I know, but I completely agree with Danielle and Rena concerning The L Word.. considering it is made by lesbians some of the sex scenes do leave me scratching my head! Bette always does the jerky head movement thing..Why??? And, yes, Shane must be extremely talented, or have body parts we don't know about...
I got totally swept up in
yay for reenacments
The Burger King thing was awesome. I totally love this movie, especially all the action and suspence. I like mob movies so I was extra happy when I watched this movie. It had all the things I like in one package. I can't wait for next week's review. And if any of you ladies came to California I would definitely dance with you.
I am my very own shade of grey.
Orgasm shot
The most interesting thing for me was the second sex scene where the butch reveals her femme side, which is something a bit taboo in some circles... And it's rare we see the face while trying to reach orgasm on screen. Wonderful! I sense consultant Susie Bright had something to do with it.
Corky and Violet, the best/hottest lesbian couple I've seen in movies. And a very good movie besides that. My straight sister could watch it. I think...
controversial??
Controversial (sp?) Why?
I've been with both beautiful, amazing femme and tomboy or butch women and we've exchanged. Am I missing something? I'm femme, but ...???

great review
Oh since you guys inadvertently brought up the l word (nice reenactment of the bette spasms.lol). Have y'all considered reviewing season 6 since 'we're getting nowhere' will be ending this month? And there is only 8 episodes left before it all over. I think it would be hilarious if you guy reviewed it in the same format that you all review the movies...just a thought
(Thanks for reading and i know my grammar is horrible)
hmm?
hmm...
That's interesting to find
The reenactments
The L Word...
Kudos
This vlog was full of life. So there is a "hope" that Caroline could join you folks. A big cheer to Denae for her hilarious re-enactment in the end.
Danielle, why a 4.5 for this movie? Can you resist a 5 for Saving Face? fO_o
Thanks for the love
Hi Denae, I'm relatively
Welcome
Of course. I remember the
Of course. I remember the day my dad told me it burned down. I was like, wow. My dad was born, and lived in Lynn for almost 30 years. So I got nothing but love for the place. ;-) Do you still live in Lynn?
Hope you are doing well, too.
Finally!!! AND they are now the Wachowski Brother and Sister
FINALLY! Thanks soo much for reviewing Bound!
OK so shamefully last summer was the first time I saw this movie with my then-girlfriend and we were both floored by how hot it was!! I kept thinking: "This was filmed in 1996?!"
Needless to say we had a great time after being inspired by the film even though we started watching it really late and were tired when we started. We weren't tired afterwards!
Gina Gershon was soooo frickin hot. And those sex scenes! Whoo!
And yeah, as previously pointed out, one of the Wachowski Brothers recently transitioned and now identifies and lives as a woman. They rock. End of story.
what i learned from Bound
You know
... when you are just flipping through the channels and nothing is on but this one show or movie that looks like something you would not watch but for some reason you just stop and some time through the movie your like why the hell am I watching this movie. Yeah well I did that and as soon as I asked my girlfriend why am I watching this corky and violet start kissing. Then I was like ooooh that's why I'm watching this for some reason I just knew. I really like Bound but my girlfriend hates it.

Hi
"aimee and jaguar" and
"aimee and jaguar" and "show me love" would be two good movies to start with.
Foreign films
Please, Aimee and Jaguar
SPOILER ALERT!
Stop reading before you watch this beautiful movie... but please try to see it..
Wonderful film and you should see it now.
Ready?
OK,
Second to Bound might be Aimee and Jaguar, an absolutely beautiful film with a performance by Maria Shrader that left me just so touched. OK so it takes place during WWII, she's Jewish and her loved one is German, so well things won't go well as you can imagine. But this is the movie where I break my rule that I mentioned above, unnecessary lesbian martydom... The acting is wonderful, and Maria Shrader's character is so nuts that she almost gets away with everything..
i totally love this movie
i totally love this movie and i feel like it has a film noir feel...the cinemaphotography is beautiful. and i loved the butch/femme dynamic of violet and corky and those technically REALISTIC and hot sex scenes. the very best part was that they outsmarted all the men (spoiler) and through their ingenuity and loyalty ended up together in the end with all the money. i still can't believe this movie was created by 2 men in the the mid-90's. it's really amazing.
Can't get videos yet, but.. on 'Bound'
I agree with sloane & other posters, it's a great film, and it's been on/top of my 5 list 'forever'.
Ok, there's a wee bit of disappointment implicit in that. Thought in 12 years there'd be more competition!! I liked 'Loving Annabelle' but, in general, I'd love if lez interest films ratcheted up a whole lot on plot, pace, characterization, suspense.. all the things keeping this film up there/on top for many of us.
I love this film and thought
VHS and DVD.
I have Bound on VHS and DVD! I started with getting the unrated VHS version because there is a few extra seconds both in the couch scene and the mattress scene where those few extra seconds really count! lol
This is one of the top of the list lesbian love story movies because it is atypical and about so much more...thus it has a great fleshed out story...with a top-notch cast. And I am not just talking about Gina and Jennifer...though the movie wouldn't be the same without them.
And I think there are stereotypes in this movie because it is of the film noir variety where stereotypes are usually quite plentiful...so the Wachowski Brothers just turned the love story part of the film on its ear and made it the freshest part of the movie.
I will never forget seeing Siskel and Ebert reviewing this film and them going on and on about how great it was...and giving it two-thumbs-up...I knew it had crossed that great divide into the mainstream and I was so excited!
This was the come to Jesus film for me...in spite of the blood...lol...and with this as my measuring stick for other lesbian films...most paled in comparison.
ALSO...it was this past season on The L Word...where I had to LOL...as I watched Shane somehow bring a bridesmaid to climax...in what must be the most new and inventive way that is yet unknown to me. lol
AND...I am looking forward to the Saving Face review...love and own this film as well...because it is a great love story...on so many different levels. And I don't know one word of Mandarin Chinese...yet that doesn't matter because the story is universal.
LASTLY...*loved* the reinactments...hilarious Burger King plumbing scene...and loved the end too...Corky tied up in the closet...you guys are great!

Another fantastic movie with
Hi Rina, It's Alejandra
Hi Rina,
It's Alejandra from Miami, I think you are good Merengue dancer. But I know what you mean about Miami, here they take their dancing seriously. I enjoyed your show this week, I listen to it at work. The movie I told you about it's called "Asi del Precipicio", you can find some clips on youtube. Here is a little piece CNN in Spanish did about the film.
It was nice meeting you,

YAY! Hi Alejandra
Hi
Eh...
I'm the only lesbian I know that didn't like this movie. I love Gina but she chooses the weirdest movies to make. But they are right, the sex scene is fabulous! I just skip past the movie and go right to that scene!
"I hate people, they hate me. So doesn't that classify as a healthy, functioning relationship?"
^_^
this was the first lesbian film i have ever watched. over here we are not allowed to buy the DVD of a film with sex scene until you are 18 years old. and i bought it right after my 18th birthday...haha, and i remembered the gal at the cashier didn't believe i was 18 and requested to check my ID. i PROUDLY replied i just passed my birthday and i have been waiting for this moment for a looooooooooog time.
this film definitely got a 5 from me...gina gershon is just too hot!!!
I hearted BOUND, but... seriously?
Bound came out right when it was really, consciously, dawning on my then-straight 19-year-old self (read: a-ha moment like a ton of f***ing bricks) that I was totally attracted to women. Naturally, I was mini-obsessed with Gina Gershon after that, and I continue to have an SG attraction for her. (As well as the only reason I could hold back the chuck while forcing myself through Showgirls.)
HOWEVER--and let me interrupt myself here to give you some "me" context: I am super into fashion, love the smell of retail, wear makeup, wanted to be a ballerina when I was little, still want to be a princess, love mani/pedis, and was the basketball player who secretly wanted to be on dance team--
So, again: HOWEVER. While watching the sex scene was hot, steamy, confirmed my assumptions about myself, etc., the sudden appearance of the 2-inch long daggerlike fingernails on Jen Tilly in between Gershon's legs made me cross my legs and whimper like a pitcher being hit by a line drive without his jock. Are you effing kidding me? When I'm single I certainly sport a little bit of a longer nail, but dude! Even my in-relationship/dating fingernails, when just-beyond boy short, are often too brutal for my partner. (I think I may suffer some PTSD from that moment. Serious.)
Also--and I know we all know this, but since it was only briefly touched on in an earlier post--just because we don't have little richards doesn't mean that to be a lesbian we either have to pick up a freaking hammer or socket wrench, or overcompensate our femininity with airbrushed Lee Press-on Nails. I love ladies who love their tools, and god knows I break for spa days, but come ON.
Though the scenes of sexual tension and sex make me a little squirrelly in my girly parts, and though this movie was like a drink of ice-cold water in the desert for us girls, take the movie as it actually is. An earlier post categorized Bound as one of their favorite "lesbian themed" movies, and lesbian "themed" it is: A "lesbian" movie made by two (albeit great and queer-friendly) men (at the time), directing two non-queer women to play directly to type.
LOL
oh jennifer tilly..
I find her absolutely hilarious. I'm surprised no one has busted out all the quotes from this movie that are ridiculous/memorable/hilarious. Preeeeettty sure my favorite is "I have a tattoo. Would you like to see it." It's almost painfully hilarious. I think y'all should choose a movie centered on dancing, this way there can be an entire reenactment of Rina dancing. Yeah, that'd be great.
Also, just wanted to comment on your outfits. Nice setup with the white, black, white, black tank top thing going on. Love it.
where are you guys?!?!?!
