Retro Reviewing: "Nina's Heavenly Delights"

This episode, the Retro Reviewers decided to do a bit of cooking in honor of the week's feature film: Nina's Heavenly Delights.

While everyone agreed that the flick was a breezy, fun, cheesy exercise in romantic comedy, nothing could stop Danielle from unleashing her improv couscous on the rest of the group.

As An Indian British

i think this film is actually better than what was rated but I think that more coz I can relate to it,

There is not alot of films that deal with the diaspora of Indian people living in the west, and I think this shows great courage in a culture where most gay people are hidden. By making a movie about tradition, family and love makes this type of story more aware to those asians that might like to think it doesn't exist.

Arrange marriages do still happen but they don't happen the in the way you think. These days is about being introduced to a guy and if your family are traditional then it means meeting them for the first time with the rest of the family all present, but having the opportunity to decide if you want to see them again or not,

my family is not traditional and our arrange marriages are more like blind dates you go on them and its totally down to u if you want to date or not.

thats my 2 pence worth any how....

I want that couch!

I agree with the ratings you guys attributed to N'sHD. It's a pretty "lovely" predictable movie. The leads were very good looking but their blossoming relationship was too tame. It looks like the director was holding back on the interaction between the two woman and didn't want to be too graphic so she would get a PG-13 rating. But, I must admit that I enjoyed the film, it made me feel good and hungry.

On a side note, I want that couch! I looks huge, old and so "douillet". I can imagine that falling asleep on it would feel like talking a nap on the crumb of a loaf.

And on another side note,

And on another side note, Retro Reviewing is my favorite blog on Afterellen :)

Cafe of India, perhaps?

My cousin used to rant and rave about the how much she loves Cafe of India. I didn't think anything of it until you mentioned Brattle Theatre.

Alas, I moved out of state before I could try it.

I've been watching these videos for a while now and never felt compelled to comment until now, haha.

This is my favorite vlog

This is my favorite vlog too!  I really enjoy this movie.  I own it on DVD and it's the reason I actually traveled an hr back to the city and went to my 1st GLBT Film Festival a few years ago.  I was sooo hungry while watching this movie!  In college, I had a good friend from Pakastan and we used to go to those restuarants and she'd place the orders....now, I have no clue, so I haven't eaten that in years.  I like the whole movie but the hottest scene is definitely their first kiss in the kitchen!  Again, I love these reviews and always look forward to them!!!

Thank you all so much for watching.  It's viewers like you that keep us going strong.  You rock the party that rocks the body! :-)

P.S. The couch is Katie's and it's very comfortable!

I love THIS FILM

I absolutely Love this film and I would have given it a Five.. I love Indian food and it totally made me hungry.  It also had such a cute ending. It was just a very enjoyable movie to watch.  I went to a screening for this film where the director gave a talk afterwards, she said it really took her a long time to make because of course companies kept wanting her to change the characters to straight characters.

She also said the story was loosely based on her life.  She said food was always such an important part of her life and that she had met one of her first loves like that.. Of course don't quote me because I saw the screening a long time ago...But I loved this film.. FIVE GAY Magic swishes from me.

want a little couscous with your pepper?

I borrowed this film from a friend once...knowing nothing other then it was a  lesbian film..but with a name like Nina's heavenly delights how bad could it be? I too was confusedly disappointed by the film...sure the food was likely good...but where were nina's heavenly delights? I too thought it could have used more passion outside of the cooking. Thankfully there was enough comedic relief coming from the other characters to keep it interesting because the two main ones I found dull...cute..but dull

Couscous and pepper

Ha! I'm touched that you noticed my constant grinding. Alas, that wasn't pepper - it was a particularly stubborn mix of Italian herbs that required serious elbow grease to get going.

Thanks everyone for the kind words about the vlog! It's nice to know that people appreciate our antics even in a low-key episode like this one.

You guys make me smile!

I watched Retro Reviewing for the first time about two weeks ago, and was hooked immediately. I then proceeded to watch every video in the space of three days, and laughed a load in that time.

So, basically, what i'm saying is you're all awesome, and i'm beyond gutted that you're only on every two weeks :-(

It does however, give me something to look forward to!

It is a light-hearted and

It is a light-hearted and feel-good movie, but not that shallow.... I think the whole set-up surrounding Nina is interesting: Indians in Glasgow (why Glasgow?), half-ownership of the restaurant (that initiated the relationship), a circle of gay male friends (and the hippie bus!), cross-cultural and inter-racial relationships. All mixed in one, just like curry. And the chemistry is right. Sure, I'd love to know more about Nina and Lisa, rather than all the characters dancing at the end, but it felt like a pleasant breeze to the cheek.

Love between Nina and Lisa was portrayed no different from that of a hetero relationship (Nina's conservative family would oppose even a guy, if they didn't like him) and was so romantic!

as a previous resident of glasgow...

In reply to 1cor13... 'why glasgow?' Why not glasgow? I find that a very strange question. People of asian origin reside in glasgow, not only that, they have done so for generations! Funnily enough that gives them rather a large stake in the place! And most relevant is the fact that Glasgow is the curry capital of the uk! Anyway, regardless of that, I felt the film was indeed cheesy, predictable and lacked substance, but fair play to them, it was well acted, had (a few) comedy lines and was a little different. It won't move mountains but as the first comment from 'crazychets' stated, it will hopefully have tickled people familiar with the city and its integral asian contingent.

Better if they'd have gone to Polo! (it's a gay club)

I lived in edinburgh whilst i was a student and a couple of years after, i regularly visited pals in Glasgae and I didn't think the accents were fake, they could've done with being a little thicker but then no one would've understood the weegies (a person fae glasgae). And i must say the people in Edinburgh are much nicer, but then i'm biased, although Glasgae has a better gay scene unlike edin, which has one lonely gay club (CC Blooms) and it's shit. It would've been awesome if they'd had some N.E.D's (Non- Educated Delinquints, commonly called chavs as well) on for pure comical factor. Maybe asking someone for 20p or a fag or just drinking buckfast in the street somewhere.

"listen here pal...." I actually watched the film about a year ago and seem to remember the ginger one annoying me for some reason, think it was the acting a bit wooden but you know, she could only go on what she got. They didn't bond bond enough for me. I think there was about one laughy jokey scene and it basically felt like a tick box, could've done with more (other than cooking) not that i didn't enjoy the film though you understand.

Good job as usual ladies 3.25 on the gay magic from me. The cous cous must have been toxic after the amount of bloody spices and herbs you put in. Shame Rina wasn't there to be inflicted try it as well.  Looking forward to next vlog.

(I was gutted that you didn't get to recap the l word final season, i cried a river)
