NINTIES NOSTALGIA

Wow, this edition brought back so many memories! I was in high school in East Africa in the nineties and those groups were my lifeblood back then!  Xscape!!! I haven’t even thought about them for well over a decade! I wore those songs out on my little tapedeck; on the dance floor; in the classroom; at the talent shows; and just the mention of each group’s name instantly recalls the strong melodies, voices and lyrics that guided my attitude to life, love and relationships as a teenager and are apparently now embedded in my psyche!
  • XSCAPE  “Kick off your shoes and relax your feet, party on down to the Xscape beat – just kick it.. JUUST KIIIIICK IT, JUUUST KIIICK IT”
  • JADE  -“I’m only one woman baby, treat me like a lady, take time to show me, that I’m your one and only “     “5-4-3-2-yo time is up!”
  • SWV “I’m so into you, I don’t know what I’m gonna dooo!”
  • TLC “What about your friends will they stand their ground,  Will they let you down again?”
  • ZHANE – Everybody move your body, now do it, here’s something that’s gonna make you move and groove, hey DJ keep playing that song of mine, on and on and on”
  • BROWNSTONE “if you love me –say it, if you trust me, do it, if you want me show it, if you need me prove it!”
Thanks for inspiring the trip down memory lane; you really put a smile on my face.  Reminds me of a time you could leave the radio on and not have to touch the dial or could watch MTV and not be faced with dozens of clones trying too hard to be sexy.  I’m off to the attic to dig up those shoeboxes of tapes and CD singles!

Those were the days...

This vlog brought back a lot of memories for me too. It's like the conversation I had with friends as we watched SWV, En Vogue and TLC come out during Alicia Keys' performance at the BET Awards a few weeks ago. My friend and I just kept talking about who was missing from the celebration of girl R&B groups.

I loved XScape--not just because of their hits ("Understanding" was definitely put on some of my love letter mixtapes back in the day), but also because they had girls of different body types. [Sidenote: I didn't know that Tiny from Xscape (or, as we called her back in the day, "the light-skinned one") is T.I's girlfriend. Also, one of the girls from Xscape wrote "No Scrubs" for TLC. Small world.)

SWV...man...to this day, I don't think there's a song that can get me dancing quicker that their "Anything" remix with Wu-Tang Clan. That was, and always will be, my jam.

dang that link makes me

dang that link makes me wish i had watched the BET awards this year. Really miss groups like those. T.i. and Tiny's public presence lately has had me thinkin about Escape. I realize that my childhood "intrest" in Tiny was probably a crush. But damn, those girls could sing. I still remember that summer that SWV had no1 locked down with "weak". Tboz did soundpretty bad in that clip, but it just hit me how weird it was to see them in 2008 (some 15yrs after they made it)with out Left Eye.RIP.
