U People: Episode 51 "Live"This week, Olive and Hanifah go live! They engage their audience in a chat about racism within the gay community, the question of civil rights and the increasing violence in LA around Prop. 8. This is their first attempt at going live, so they ask that you please pardon the audio distortions heard within the first couple of minutes of the broadcast. They promise it'll be perfected next time. For more on U People, visit ILoveUPeople.com. Submitted by on November 15, 2008 - 9:00am. |

Yeah
U People, whatever happened to the Gloria interviews?
those were sick, more Gloria interviews please!
i feel like
some white folks just need something to hate. The battle is not with people of any race it is with GOD. Plus if no is yes and yes is no that's confusing in its self and if your not a LBGT u were probaly not interested in knowing what was anyway. If it wasnt for afterellen i wouldn't hav a clue. But ignorance will always be around.
I do Agree with uppl and they should hav reached out morew than they did and try harder next time
And I am a lesbian. Born in CA but do not reside
i tried
It was so much fun chatting
It was so much fun chatting with you guys and watching it live. This is the perfect timing since I no longer watch Grey's Anatomy. Now I can watch real lesbians and I don't have to worry about one of you suddenly dissappearing.

New voices for me
Thanks for this vlog and yes the technical difficulties were really annoying but well worth putting up with to watch through in its entirity.
Olive and Hanifah provided me with a lot of food for thought. It's obvious there is a lot of discussion and debate still to be had on what is the community. Is there a gay community? Or, are there separate communities with different agendas and values - is that ok or do we need to be brought together? Or do some feel they have more worth than others?
Is there a shared vocabulary? If not why not? And who gets to decide that and where do people of different colour and race meet to have that LGBT discussion?
For my part, I believe we are all different and difference is more often a positive and informative thing. It should not be used by any group as an excuse to revel in ignorance, prejudice or bogotry.
Hanifah and Olive do a great job in presenting an uncomfortable set of issues and problems with tact and intelligence. It's not always easy to confront the fact that not everything is fabulous in the garden of gays and I look forward to watching the next vlog.
Understand
I understand what you are saying L Plates. I would like to here/read responses to your questions as well. Thanks.
Thanks for the live vlog episode.
Suggestion for live streaming: For the calls, can you all make sure you have the volume at a nice sound so the people calling from phones can be heard. I could not hear the last caller that well until Olive turned the volume up high.
Prop 8 Protest
At the prop 8 protest in nyc. i saw a white male protesterwith a sigh that said
'mormons and blacks need to relax'
I was definitely offended.
"They' are trying to use mainstream media turn 'Us' against each other by manipulating statistics. And even gay people are falling for it.
This is a great idea!
I like the new format. I've put it on my calendar for this week.
Numbers talk - and I'm so glad that you were able to provide and explain some additional numbers and facts to support what I think most of us were thinking with respect to the hate-propaganda that is being spewed even from within the gay community! Its so sad when people who should understand the notion of other start attacking each other.
I've been saying it for ages, the fight for rights should not be at a state level - this absolutely has to be fought at the federal level...otherwise, we're winning some battles, but the real war continues to be lost.
Another thought - I think the homophobia in the of-colour communities is a self fulfilling prophecy. In general, there are fewer people of colour who live outside of the closet - and without more people coming out and challenging the current paradigm, there will continue to be the ignorant and false belief that homosexuality is something that is not part of our makeup - and the ridiculous notion that it is a western disease that is infiltrating the community. Thats just bogus, and we need to seriously individually work to extinguish that lie! Just as women have had to do, and continue to do, to remove the stereotype of what is "womens work" versus a "man's job"!
Love never loses its way home. Remember...its about the journey, not the destination

Thank you for talking about the elephant in the room, Hanifah and Olive. Since i've been out at 16 and attended a few gay pride marches and be "in the life' I have seen prejudges from all sides. From hetero black communities, white hetero communities and from gay homo communities. I wonder how in the world do any of these people sleep peacefully at night when they're so angry all the time? They too need to heal. One of the ways is communication and listening like Hanifah pointed out. When you do those things pay attention and feel what they are saying before pre-thinking what you are going to say next. This is a tool of a spiritual lesson to use when having a conversation about such sore issue. I hope those people on both sides of the protest that occurred a few days ago are alright. Know as long as we are talking, we are healing.
Now, I like your new format. It's great to hear what others have to say. I hope the quality of your video and telephone sounds are better.
Thank you both!
