News, Reviews & Commentary on Lesbian and Bisexual women in Entertainment and the Media

UK sensation Little Boots defends her sexuality after kissing a female friend

I've been hooked on Little Boots brand of indie-pop for a few months now, but never bothered to look up too much about the woman behind the adorable moniker. And then she came up on my faux-lez radar — notice I did not say "gaydar."

Victoria Hesketh is her real name, and the UK-based singer apparently has a talent not only for making great music, but for finding herself being photographed kissing other women.

Little Boots told The Sun that she is not bisexual, despite being seen kissing fellow musician and friend Florence Welch of Florence and the Machine after the NME Awards back in February. (Yes, February — and yet it's still something she's interviewed about now.)

"I was not kissing back," she said. "As much as I love Florence, not in that way. She is crazy, in the best possible way."

Little Boots also told the paper she "was drunk and shocked out of [her] skin" and that "Lots of singers are saying they're bisexual these days. I'm definitely not in that camp. But great for all the people that are."

And, of course, she mentions she has a boyfriend. Congrats, Mr. Little Boots, whomever you are.

Don't you just love the "I was drunk" excuse? It happens so often, apparently, that alcohol suddenly gives women's lesbian gene a little push to the forefront, urging even the straightest of women to make out with their friends.

And for what? Well, it would seem attention, and it appears to work. Now that the defensive "I'm really straight, I was just drunk" press tour has commenced, it's time to move on to something else for the papers to buzz about — you know, something to write about besides your music.

Really, this personifies why I dislike the Katy Perry song so much: It's based on real life experiences — the kind that make lesbianism look like a drunken party trick.

I'm not saying I think less of Little Boots, or Florence, for that matter, but I don't get drunk and get the urge to kiss dudes. Just sayin'.

sticker's picture

Word.

Agreed, this business of kissing other women and brushing it off like it meant nothing 'cause "I was drunk" is getting pretty old. And it stays *really* lame.

Trish, that last line killed me. Too funny! And so true.

That's exactly why I hate

That's exactly why I hate that song.

Lol, i don't get that urge

Lol, i don't get that urge either, but i do have a very gay friend who kisses dudes as a sign of friendship when she's trashed; she is slightly worried by this fact when she is told about it the next day, it's pretty hilarious :-)

Talking to straight people doesn't have to be an awkward bore

Little Boots

Hmm interesting take. I'm a bit torn. I get why you're annoyed by this, what with faux-lesbianism being the hottest pick-up tool for straight girls these days.

But I've to admit that she is in no way giving lesbians or bisexuals a bad name. She even supports us: "great for all the people that are".

She had fun, she doesn't pretend to be someone she's not, and she's not homophobic - in fact she shows respect for queers.

The only people she's giving a bad name are straight girls. She's just a promiscuous straight girl. A little tacky, yes, but so are the rediculously short skirs that girls wear to clubs these days - then again, we can't really expect everyone to have manners haha. Not my thing, but whatever's her thing is her thing. I say, let her be.

Anonymous's picture

Completely agree!

No harm done! The girl appears to have been caught in the moment.

i honestly believe that nobody is 100% gay or 100% straight. Kissing a girl because they like it is one thing. Guys thinking girls pull girls for their pleasure is another - and often their wishful thinking.

Hey it could be worse, we could be a male couple wanting to hold hands in the street.

In terms of visibility, I'd say it's positive. But then that's just me.

i want an athlete!'s picture

Also

Who even bats an eye when a girl hooks up randomly with a guy she doesn't even like, when she does it just for fun?

I sometimes feel like by highlighting that it's, you know - with a girl, we're in fact separating ourselves from straight people.

I'd say, treat everybody equally. Who cares that this is girl-girl? She's tacky because she hooked up with someone she didn't like, and just for once. That's tacky. That it happened to be with a girl has nothing to do with it.

brazen's picture

mmm, agreed here too

This article seems to be about getting indignant for all the wrong reasons. She's (whoever she is, I've never heard of the woman) not fauxgay, she's being clear she is not but has been respectful about LBGT and gave a valid reason why.

Alcohol is a well known inhibiton remover and sexual stimulant. When I have had a few I love everyone and fancy a shag too. And beer goggles can come into play too...

Nothing To Do With It

While I understand what you're saying, I think that you're sort of missing the questions that some people are asking--the topics that this is bringing to mind. The tackiness aspect transcends gender / sexual preference. However, I think that you can discuss the girl-girl issue without separating yourself from straight people.

 Reaction in society:

Girl-guy ~ people don't bat an eye

Girl-girl ~ bit of novelty value & some people bat an eye

Guy-Guy ~ people bat serious eye

Empathy / Analyzing: If I were drunk, would I make out with a man? Does this say something about the average lesbian's feelings toward heterosexual encounters vs. the average straight girl's feelings towards homosexual encounters? Would people participate in this kind of activity without some sort of hidden attraction?

 Etc.

=)

i want an athlete!'s picture

Humh. Interesting. I

Humh. Interesting. I completely agree with what you says, only I think it kind of proves my point further haha...

At the moment, society does care more when two girls kiss than when two straights do. But just because it is that way, doesn't mean it should be. To me, a perfect world would be one where it didn't matter whether the people kissing were the same or opposite genders.

If we lesbians/bisexuals make a big deal out of these things, then we're the ones separating ourselves, which is exactly what we're trying to avoid. Why would we make a big deal out of it? Shouldn't this be just as uninteresting as if she kissed a random guy?

Just a thought... hope that made sense!

Jamie's picture

Small Potatoes...

Sure, I totally get what you're saying. And as to whether or not this is an important happening, I personally don't think that it is.

I think that people are talking about the implications this kind of activity has on our society these days.

Number 1: Whether or not making out with a girl when you're drunk means that you are, in fact, attracted to girls. If you are and you claim that you're not, you're closeting yourself. This is where the separation from making out with a random guy comes in.

Number 2: The trend of lesbian activity. When I was in eighth grade, half of the seventh grade girls at my school came out as being bi. Half. At least. They did this because their friends were doing it and they thought that liking girls would be cool--would make them cuter. This is something that we have to deal with in our community because it's no fun to get strung on by a bicurious straight girl. Katy Perry?

Just a thought as well. Something to think about. Small potatoes in the grand scheme of things.

Manuela's picture

Já!

I hate katy's song for the same reason that you do. Im just tired of being pointed like someone that kiss other girls just for fun.. or being drunk. But, can we do something? (i'm not saying that we can't, just asking) I mean, Katy's saying that its o.k to kiss a girl in a party, you was just trying and there's a whole bunch of other songs and mass media saying the same and in the collective mind, it creates a misconception of lesbianism .  . don't you think?

Don't you just love the "I was drunk" excuse? It happens so often, apparently, that alcohol suddenly gives women's lesbian gene a little push to the forefront, urging even the straightest of women to make out with their friends. ----> HILARIOUS.

AGREED

tired of hearing about this, and tired of katy perry, i hate what she means for our society, i hate everything about her... sadly, i kissed a girl is catchy enough to be around

Glad to hear she didnt run

Glad to hear she didnt run away screaming 'im not gay im not gay im not gay' and stood up for us. But thats what everybody should do, so I dont want to applaud her for being a decent human.

The idea of Florence kissing girls does make me pretty excited though...

While there was no mention

While there was no mention of her running away(lol), she definitely did the 'I'm not gay'- just not in those words:

"I was not kissing back," she said. "As much as I love Florence, not in that way. She is crazy, in the best possible way."

Little Boots also told the paper she "was drunk and shocked out of [her] skin" and that "Lots of singers are saying they're bisexual these days. I'm definitely not in that camp."

Hmmm

I'm not going to jump on the boat to hate miss little boots for kissing a girl. Who are we to say who kisses who, or what the act of a kiss means to a person? So she kissed a girl and she isn't bisexual. Have you really NEVER met a gay guy who makes out with his gril friends when they are wasted? Because I have. Dozens upon dozens of them. It's not my thing, I don't kiss guys when Im drunk, but Im not about to hate two consenting adult women having what seems to be a passion-less, short kiss on their own time. Especially a gay friendly woman like Hesketh, who is scheduled to play at Manchester, UKs pride in August. How many popular female artists do you know these days volunteering at your local pride?

I dont really get what the

I dont really get what the issue is. She's young, why can't she have fun? I kiss boys all the time when I'm out,  their mostly gay and we just think it's a laugh. That's probably because I'm not very classy and am a big drunken chav but still, don't get why everyone gets so angry over stuff like this.

Florence kissing girls?

Hello! That photo has made my day. Is she bi?Back to the point, I don't really see what the problem is. Looks like Little Boots just had a wee bit too much to drink and was having some fun. Fair play to her.
Anonymous's picture

LIL BOOTS?

They look like they're giving each other those fake hollywood kisses, where one of them is actually kissing the back of their hand. And how did she come up with Little Boots? Sounds like a 10 year old rappers name. At any rate I've never heard of Little Boots and I probably won't waste my time looking her up. As for the Katy Perry song...as much as I hate the lyrics, the song is so catchy and i will sing it all day! ARG!
Megsy's picture

Whats the problem?

The Sun prints the biggest loada rubbish, they probably paraphrased the hell out of what Little Boots said (not that she said anything wrong). I'm 100% comfortable with my sexuality, but I would kiss a male friend if I was drunk and it was a bit of a laugh. Think people have got overly sensitive about things. Yea the Katie Perry thing was annoying and all the baggage that followed, but this is different, I don't see the harm.
eeyore's picture

I don't get it -

why should I be notified each time some girls are experimenting with same-sex kissing?
Lara Palliard's picture

Yep...

...I wish I weren't notified either...
Lara Palliard's picture

Lesbianism is not a drunken party trick...

...yet, kissing another girl CAN be one.

Sorry, but it does exist. I don't think someone has to be called "bisexual" because once they kissed another boy or girl.

There are situations that lead to others and that's that.

Just sayin'.

more explains than defends.

umm... "I was drunk" is a very valid excuse for kissing a mate. I do it quite often (and all my mates are guys). It just seems like a fun at the time.

Plus, it's not like she wrote a super insensitive song about it....

FLORENCE!!

I feel the need to defend Florence a bit here.  I am a massive Florence fan (verging on the obssesive) and in a interview i saw with her a few months a go she was asked 'have you ever kissed a girl and liked it?' (cliche i know) but Florence answered yes, no excuses, no jumping to the drunken excuse and she sat there and acted completly normal, like she should of done.  Florence is known for being quite quirky and crazy and im sure was just having a laugh and not trying to get attention... and ive met her bf.

I LOVE FLORENCES NEW SONG ITSSSSS SOOO GOOD!!!

and little boots is just a hottie!!!!

Like a lot of people on

Like a lot of people on here have said, I don't think it's such a big deal when two drunk friends kiss each other, no matter what their gender or sexualities are. So, cameras happened to be there, and the media loves to make a big deal out of things like this.

What is a big deal is when Katy Perry totally exploits it, making it seem like a big deal and like she's so badass for doing it. Little Boots isn't exploiting it.

sparklet's picture

How about this?

sloppy drunk straight girls trying to make out with out lesbians because they may think it's sure deal.  this sadly happened to me a few months back.  not cute.
alex's picture

little boots and florence?!??

i have no doubt that theyre both straight, but damn, a girl can dream.  two of my fave singers in a goofy drunken lip lock? it's not the ideal situation, but im glad florence has such poise about the matter. and honestly, im sort of glad that Victoria isnt playing the girl who cried bisexual; it's unfortunate, yes, but id rather have her be honest and admit it was some drunken fun verses all the women claiming to be bi for attention.

gonna go listen to these girlies now. maybe theyll do a duet!

Is this really anything to be offended by?

"I was not kissing back," she said. "As much as I love Florence, not in that way. She is crazy, in the best possible way."

Well there you go. She's not claiming to be gay or bi or whatever so what's the problem? Where is this faux lez mess coming from?

Whether it's Katy Perry (who writes fun party songs), NOFX (whose accused of being homophobic despite always being gay allies), Eminem (never should have been taken seriously anyways) and now  Little Boots... why be so overly sensitive to musicians?

It's seems if straight musicians even mention gays theres always someone who gets their panties in a bunch. Learn to laugh/not take everything so seriously people :)

True equality

Hopefully one day, she wouldn't have to be afraid of people judging her. That she can kiss guy, girl or frog - and won't be scared that people would label her. That lesbian or bisexual won't have such negative connotations such that anyone'll so quick to deny it, like a hot potato.
Anonymous's picture

.

just a bit of harmless fun, why label her as faux-lez when she's clearly stating that she was caught off guard and 'definitely not in the camp'?

anyhow, speaking of fun, i'll be seeing florence and the machine at the lovebox festival in july. woohoo.

getting drunk

Do you remember what Elle MacPherson told Cate Capshaw in "A girl thing"? after admitting she was actracted to her while they were drinking a Martini cocktail?

"Do you think alcoholism is directly related with lesbianism?" and the answer was "Maybe!".

Maybe we all should go to rehab and become straight?

Galaxyglue's picture

Who cares ?

Arent we equally to blame with this morbid curiosity of celebrities ? I frankly dont care what she does with her love life or who she kisses.  Its true if she was kissing a guy no one would be talking about this. I think by directing attention to it, we are separating ourselves from straight people.

These types of drunken antics are something I dont care to see from anyone - regardless of their sexuality. Its a major reason I dont go to the clubs anymore. I'll stick to a low key neighborhood pub that is filled with witty conversation.

Stop hating on Katy Perry

Stop hating on Katy Perry. She doesn't have to be homosexual to sing about kissing a girl. A lot of women kiss girls who are bisexual, curious, or just fluid -- and to constantly pick on a WOMAN, honestly just because she's a woman that doesn't fit your perfect little world of homosexuality doesn't make it a bad song. It seems that women constantly have to pick on each other and bring each other down. Instead of just saying, "hey, I'm glad she's a successful woman," that brought light to a situation many women get involved in.

I've taken psych and woman's study classes and it's way too stereotypical of women going after a successful woman artist -- for what? A song you didn't like? How about instead, go write about all the male singers that have degrading lyrics about women and talking about women like, "b*tches, whores, objects," etc... There's plenty of those songs and male artist. Hear about them anywhere or often? No. But of course, we're subjected to women forever having something negative to say about other women. I'm tired of it...

Oh and this artist can kiss whomever she likes and she doesn't have to be homosexual to kiss a friend. I kissed a gay guy friend of mine while playing spin the bottle... Does that make us both straight? No.

I don't see the problem

I don't see the problem with girls kissing girls when they're drunk if they're not trying to say they're bisexual. People do get more touchy when they're drunk. I remember years ago accidently properly kissing a guy goodbye when I was drunk because my friend was kissing the guy she had been talking to as we left and so it just seemed like a normal goodbye kiss until after when I was like, hmm. Usually its a hug (I mean it wasn't unusual and I'm sure he kissed me cus he liked me but for me it was to say goodbye.. as in not a sexual way really and thus I can see why if you're having fun with friends hugging might not seem touchy enough and kissing might happen.)

I mean that was only the once but anyways.. And plus she wasn't even kissing back apparently. I don't think its fair that she came up on your faux-gay radar if that's what yuou were saying.. If no girls were gay then I think drunk girls would still snog girls so although it can sometimes be negative its not really the same as being faux-gay

and I don't think she 'defended' it in a defensive way if you see what I mean

but anyways, I don't mean that in a bad way concerning the article.
