News, Reviews & Commentary on Lesbian and Bisexual women in Entertainment and the Media

Best. Lesbian. Week. Ever. (May 25, 2007)

COME OUT? CANNES DO!
French writer/director Céline Sciamma (second from the left in the picture below), whose first film, Water Lilies (Naissance Des Pieuvres), premiered at the 2007 Cannes Film Festival to strong reviews last week, recently came out in an interview with The Advocate.

Water Lilies follows a group of 15-year-old girls as they come into their sexuality, and as one of the girls falls in love with another. Sciamma observed, “I wanted to contribute. There's really a lack of homosexual representation [in the movies], and I've suffered from this. Stories can really fulfill the lack of love or experience you can have when you're young.”

I concur. I had a lot of deprogramming to do after years of relying exclusively on Charlie's Angels and Laverne & Shirley for information about same-sex love.

AS NASTY AS THEY WANT TO BE
Yo Majesty, an openly lesbian rap group out of Tampa, Fla., is quickly gaining national and international recognition for their bawdy Miami bass sound. A mention in a recent issue of The New Yorker even included a (favorable) comparison to the infamous 2 Live Crew. Yo Majesty, featuring Shunda-K, Jwl. B and Shon-B, is currently touring the U.S. and Canada.

Check out their MySpace page for music, videos and a video interview with the band by Beth Ditto of The Gossip.

Have a problem with Yo Majesty's profanity? Talk to the hand — which they've conveniently provided for you in the picture above.

BUT WAIT, THERE'S MORE!
Exorcist director William Friedkin's new thriller/horror film, Bug, starring Ashley Judd, opens today. In the film, Judd plays Agnes, a down-and-out waitress who falls in love with paranoid Gulf War veteran Peter, who sees bugs everywhere and eventually drags her into his nightmare. The matchmaker for the young lovers? Agnes' best friend, R.C. (I hope her last name isn't "Cola"), who just happens to be a lesbian.

Bisexual actor Anne Heche is embroiled in a bitter divorce/custody battle with estranged husband Coley Laffoon.

The annual Cinema Against AIDS charity auction was held at the Cannes Film Festival this week, raising a record-breaking $7.5 million — in part due to former Lost star Michelle Rodriguez's offer to kiss host Sharon Stone if attendees dug just a little deeper into their wallets.

Monday is Memorial Day, and we'll be taking the day off, so check back next Tuesday for new stuff on AfterEllen.com. Have a great weekend!

That's it for this week! Check back next Friday for your regularly scheduled Sarah Warn edition of Best. Lesbian. Week. Ever.

All I Can Think

Of is RENT. To the Village Voice and any passing fad! Bisexual, trisexuals, homosapians... and then I go totally blank. Yo Majesty look pretty great.

I wish everyone would 'get over' Desperate Housewives. The title says it all, seriously. And EVa Longoria bothers me. NOT HOT, seriously. I've watched the first season and I can honestly say I would rather have teeth pulled than endure another moment. But, to those who like it, I respect that and am only one voice, which you may drown out by turning the volume up louder!

Thanks, Karman, too, not only for filling in for Ms. Warn, but for doing such a great job of it too!

Good Times.

I've haven't watched DH since season two but, I like Eva Longoria and "If I was a lesbian"... oh, wait... yeah, I'd totally do her.

Rachel Hunter playing a lesbian. Yes, please!

I was just about to ask you what the tat meant (in that other forum) when luckily I took a second look.  ;)

I can appreciate Eva's looks but for some reason she doesn't illicit much in me.  Which seems wrong on paper.  However I do love Teri Hatcher for some reason.  I guess its that quirky thing she has going.  It stems from adolescence and the Superman series.

as much as I enjoy sarah warn's best. lesbian. week. ever., I enjoyed this week's column WAY more! maybe you could alternately write it? just an idea...

Oh Eva

Ok, I am not the biggest Eva Longoria fan but if she really wants to have "full-on gay experience" I could ahow her how it is done :D

Isaiah thing

I've gotta say that I dont think  what's his name did a very good job of redeeming himself after that kafuffle. I didn't beleive a word he said. And the look in his eye, he doesn't even look remorseful.
Slym's picture

Couldn't Agree More

I couldn't agree with you more.  All he wants is his job back - this had nothing to do with his slur.  His paycheck on Greys must be good and he doesn't want to lose it - that's all there is to it.  He's a disappointment to black people in the industry and everywhere else.

eternuslux's picture

How Ignorant!

I registered just so I could log in and tell you what an utterly stupid thing it is you wrote. Isaiah Washington represents himself as an individual, he does not speak for the entire African American community nor does anyone expect him to.

Whether you are black (which is a frightening thought but you very well could be) or not, be mindful that White people say stupid things all the time and no one ever accuses them of being a disappointment to an entire race, give Black people the same respect and realize we are INDIVIDUALS.

Sally's picture

I am also skeptical about him!

I trust him as far as I can throw him! He is not honest, he is only trying to get back into the nicer side of things.  I heard his words, but they were a script and they were lacking of sincerity.  He is still on my "Homophobe" list.

The Lincoln Ad

I've seen this commercial a million times, and I was under the impression that the other "adult" woman is supposed to be the oldest daughter.  I thought that was kinda the idea of the dialogue anyway.  Can someone confirm that the commercial is truly about two moms?
Tallulah71's picture

Four minutes later, I had

Four minutes later, I had the same thought. :)

eek's picture

Wishful Thinking

Yeah, that Lincoln ad is definitely a mom and her daughters.  I think they had to put an older daughter in there to a. sell to teens and b. it would be really gross if all those guys were oggling that lady's young daughters.

I have to say the first time the ad came on it had MY undivided attention.  I think it's meant to "be interpreted" - but safe enough to advertise to all those "fun" conservatives.
dypole's picture

Good things come in three

Well, she says something about chasing the perfect wave and catching three, so I would assume that means her three daughters. The fact that the guys think she's a young surfer chick and not just a MILF only adds to the absurdity of the situation.

My gay goggles need repair!

I had seen the Lincoln commercial on tv, but never realized it was a lesbian couple. I thought the woman doing the voiceover was the mother and the other three were her daughters.

I appreciate that Ms. Longoria wanted to introduce a lesbian relationship on the show, but this just makes lesbianism sound like the must-have fashion accessory of the season:

announced that she regretted not having a "full-on gay experience" before settling down with boyfriend Tony Parker

Although perhaps if she'd tried "teh gay," she wouldn't be settling down with Mr. Parker. ;)

Isaiah

I'm glad we have Black bloggers like Jasmyne Cannick to give us the REAL scoop on Mr. Washington.  As she said in her blog about his foundation that's BEEN doing wonderful things in Sierra Leone:

"While America was hollering and calling for his removal from “Grey’s Anatomy” for calling one of his fellow co-stars a faggot (which to this day I have never seen actual proof of) , Isaiah was busy doing his thing in Africa where people have far more to worry about than who called who a name and trying to get someone fired.  Somehow running water, electricity, medicine, and food seem to be a bit more important in the scheme of things.  Ya feel me?  And anyways, Isaiah is way to conscious to be sucked into all of that madness.  Ya’ll just don’t know."

Ashe Jasmyne!

***********************************************************************

"All the women are white, all the men are Black, but some of us are BRAVE."

Slym's picture

Utter Nonsense.....!!!

In as much as it's good what Isaiah is doing in Africa and I give him full credit for it - THIS IN NO WAY EXCUSES WHAT HE SAID/DID and I must voice my disagreement with you on this matter.

Another issue I have to take you up on is this... "I'm glad we have Black bloggers like Jasmyne Cannick to give us the REAL scoop on Mr. Washington" and "While America was hollering and calling for his removal from “Grey’s Anatomy” for calling one of his fellow co-stars a faggot (which to this day I have never seen actual proof of)" Both these statements I find are truly opinionated and racist if you ask me.  For your information I AM BLACK (and very proud to be so - if I might add) and I fail to understand why you think that you have the right to speak on behalf OF ALL BLACKS!!.  I will have you know that I can speak very much for myself Thank You.

What he did was appalling.  Whereas we scream DISCRIMINATION against US blacks ALL OVER THE WORLD - where do we get off DISCRIMINATING against Gays!

If I'm to take your statements at face value, then I am to believe and uphold that as long as you are doing good in the world, then you have the right to call people names!  That's like stating that because Angelina Jolie is a Goodwill Ambassor that she has the right to wreck any marriage that she wants and it will be ok.  Let me state clearly here though that Jolie bears only 50% of the blame, Brad merits the other 50% (Although I am yet to read anything written about this blame ANYWHERE as far as he is concerned).  Everyone has made Jolie out to be the Villain, but Brad ain't no Saint but enough of that.

tiff's picture

I agree with you Slym,

I agree with you Slym, absolutely. On the Isaiah Washington thing AND Angelina Jolie (I think both her and Brad are to blame but I really think neither has been made a villain since they're absolutely praised for their compulsive adopting)

On the other note, I followed the Isaiah Washington a bit more than I should have. And Jasmyne Cannick just proved that her "reporting" is certainly not done with 20/20 vision. She's extremely racist. And she needs a little lesson in getting the actual facts, watching the actual footage, before saying ridiculous crap regarding what an incident she thinks is "alleged" because, why? Because she puts her loyalty to her race before the actual truth?
Slym's picture

And I Agree With You

I agree with you and the other points that you mentioned.  Your point has been well taken.  I suppose I was a bit general on what you quoted because I was a bit over-emotional.

I stand corrected. :)

Lincoln

Hmm. I always thought that that was a commercial with a mom and her 3 daughters... A really hot mom with a hot oldest daughter...
Ms. V.'s picture

Lincoln commercial

I have seen that commercial a couple of times and never noticed the second mother. Since she comes out of the car at the last second it's hard to catch, I just assumed those were three daughters. And I thought the guys were disappointed because mommy #1, with the children on hand, was clearly not single.

It's a lot more ambiguous than that eclipse gum commerical, which I really like.

I saw Judy Gold perform last night at Comix in NYC. She was hilarious and mentioned the fact that she always MC's really serious events. People will be talking about the holocaust or something of that nature and all of a sudden the announcer goes, "You've seen her on Comedy Central and HBO, ladies and gentlemen, Judy Gold!"

deja's picture

Lincoln

Personally, I think the lesbian overlay on the Lincoln MKX commercial is more wishful thinking than anything else.  Given that the 2nd oldest female is clearly a teenager, it never struck me as anything more than a smoking hot mom and her 3 daughters.

There are others, though, who have noticed a possible lesbian interpretation.  For example, this blog entry about another surfing lesbian mom.

Slym's picture

Blows Me Right Outta Da Water

This thing about the lincoln commercial has blown me right outta da water.  I would not for even a split second gotten anything lesbian from it.  It's a mother with her three daughters!  That's what I've always seen.  The guys were disappointed to see that she had 3 daughters - that's what I see when I watch it.  I'll certainly be paying closer attention to it, but I'm amazed at the lesbian connotation.  The lincoln ad - LESBIAN - come on now!!!!!
Slym's picture

Well Done!

Karman:

Well Done!!  Very good post - Sarah has definitely left us in capable hands and I had no doubt about this at all.

I have to say that I'm beginning to become annoyed with all the networks and these "straight" women who want to do lesbian roles.  Call me cynical if you want, but I am of the opinion that they are just using the gay scene to up there ratings, make money and/or gain more recognition (in terms of the actors).  Gays are now being commercialized and I cannot be happy about that one bit!!!!

P.S.  Please let Sarah know that we treated you nicely so that we are all not forced to watch BAD MOVIES and EAT BAD FOOD **winks & smiles***

Final Girl's picture

"I have to say that I'm

"I have to say that I'm beginning to become annoyed with all the networks and these "straight" women who want to do lesbian roles."

I agree that some same-sex escapades (sexcapades?) on TV, especially, are nothing but ratings-grabbers, but it's a case-by-case kinda thing. That's a whole discussion about the importance of visibility and all that, I suppose.

I'm happy, however, to see straight actors playing gay roles. There used to be a huge stigma attached to playing homosexual on-screen, and it's fantastic to see that fall away. The inverse is true as well; gay actors should be able to play straight roles without a hitch. They're actors, after all, and it's all make believe. I don't expect someone to be a real-life murderer because they're signed up to play Ted Bundy in a film.

Is the Desperate Housewives thing strictly for "shock" value? Meh. I have no idea and I don't watch the show. A straight friend said virtually the same thing to me a couple of months ago, so it can't be too outrageous a statement. :^)

As appealing as it would be

to believe the lincoln commercial is a 2 mom family, I'm on board the boat believing it's a mom and three kids.

Lincoln

if you listen to the woman over the dialog, she says something about catching the 3 prefect little waves. so i dont think there is a lesbian concept behind that. but wishful thinking.
Slym's picture

EXACTLY!!!!!

Now that you mention it, that's EXACTLY RIGHT!!!  The voice over says "THREE PERFECT LITTLE WAVES".  There's no way she could be talking about another adult woman and be referring to her as "a little wave".  So whoever drummed this up needs to bury it!
Ruth's picture

Not exactly.

"My dream was always to catch the perfect wave. And then I realised - I caught three."

She doesn't say "little."

Not like it matters since I still think its a woman with her three daughters.

Eva and Lincoln

I thought the Lincoln commercial was about a mom and her kids as well.  And I don't find Eva Longoria hot at all.  Eva Mendes is pretty cute though.

Awesome job on the column!

GATA's picture

EVA L..

OK,, so I beleive longoria defenitely desires to have a lesbian affair or adventure or what ever you might want to call it,, but if she has continuosly(?)mentioned "lesbianisim" is because there is something behind it,, yeah, i'm defenitely with you on that one,,I think that what ever eva needs to do in order for her to calm her desire for real hot sex is to go talk to Ilene Chaiken to let her play on the L word,,

HeY kate,, maybe you might wanna handle this one,,make us a miracle!

Slym's picture

I'll Drink to That

I'll certainly drink to that.  All Eva L has to do is go talk to Chaiken, although she's not Sarah Shahi, It would certainly be a nice swap!!!

Ahhh... we can ALL dream now can't we?  Wouldn't that be nice.... *sighs and goes off to daydream about Eva L being on TLW next season*

in fact too good be true. Not that I ever thought it was a good idea in the first place. Thinking of those two in a movie/mini-series that is GREAT as it is, almost makes me sick to my stomach. But Eva stated in some interview or something that is was pure rumour.

Anne Heche Apologize?

Bean67

Anne Heche is truly mentally ill. She speaks "Celestia," which she claims Jesus bestowed on her. That's real bat sh** nuts.  She can barely manage her own life and she's supposed to see beyond that to apologize for perpetuating a stereotype? Yeesh!

How about Michelle Rodriguez apologizing for playing the girl on girl card only when it suits her career interests?

I don't know, but I think Michelle Rodriguez's offer to kiss Sharon Stone if the audience gave more money to the cause was a clever way to corner Sharon into a kiss!
Sporty Spice's picture

Nice job, Karman!

Good work filling in. BLWE was enjoyable, as always.

Yeah, good question about why that picture of Mary Cheney's kid, sans moms, was released. It's creepy to see Satan's Messenger (Dick) anywhere near an innocent baby. He's evil, and his daughter is a total shill for the Republican hate machine. I feel sorry for that poor little kid. Talk about an accident of birth.

Eva Longoria is pretty hot, and I'm going to go against the grain here and say I enjoy Desperate Housewives. It's a great guilty pleasure; not as great as watching reruns of Dynasty, but pretty good. And Eva, about that 'full-on' experience thing - look me up...

So I guess Washington has gone to rehab or deprogramming or whatever, and loves the gays now, huh??

...and BackToBasics, love the inclusion of the Kit Porter quote! When Ms. Porter drops the F-bomb, she don't f*** around...

Melissa Hsu's picture

Since we seem to be

Since we seem to be rehashing the Washington incident I would like to know, did the guy ever say anything homofobic when calm and rational? Did he ever treat his fellow castmember with less respect when calm and rational?

I think it is ridiculously pc to fall all over someone for saying something in anger! And I am sure we have all used some not pc term when angry enough! Who would liked to be judged on that instance?

And to go even more against the grain( no, not with that intent!) I think this weeks column was ok but in general I think Sarah Warn does a better job! But maybe it's just that I think her writing "flows" more!

tiff's picture

Actually...

"Since we seem to be rehashing the Washington incident I would like to know, did the guy ever say anything homofobic when calm and rational? Did he ever treat his fellow castmember with less respect when calm and rational?"                                                                                                                         The guy repeated the word when "calm and rational," lying about the entire incident in denying it ever happened. And he is a loose cannon. He attempted to choke Patrick Dempsey, when Dempsey defended TR Knight after Washington went around name-calling. The situation was slowly fading away after the initial time, but Washington went and dredged it back up when he lied on-camera about the fact that he said it.
