"Come to My Window:" a Cross-Cultural Lesbian Experience

Manan Katohora, writer and director of last year's When Kiran Met Karen, really has a thing for lesbians. Or at least for featuring them in lead roles in his films. Katohora's latest screenplay, Come to My Window (which features the Melissa Etheridge song by the same name) is currently being filmed in Washington, D.C., and again, revolves around lesbian characters.

But this time, it's different, Katohora says, as Come to My Window is more of a "true coming out story" about two neighbors, an Indian named Priya (Simi Van Scoy) and an American named Nicole (Alison Hight) falling in love.

Come to my Window is Katohora's third film involving lesbians (the second is this year's Extrospection, a twist of a coming out story in which a mother comes out to her  daughter), and he says this pattern reflects his experiences.

"I was raised by a very strong independent mother, have two strong independent sisters. .. I am surrounded by strong independent South-Asian and American women," he says. "I think the reason, with god's grace, my films get lot of buzz, and win awards, and somehow find distribution, is because of these strong independent South-Asian female characters. Otherwise most films have the same old, play a wife, play a girlfriend-kinda roles."

In Come to My Window, both leads play "the girlfriend role."

Which is exactly what attracted Van Scoy (who is also the film's co-director/co-producer) to the project.

"I have always been intrigued with controversial issues, so for me this was a great opportunity to speak up in a way, in regards to the cultural and homosexuality issues, " she says. Van Scoy has known Katohora for several years and when he approached her to get involved, she said, "I simply could not refuse because the script is absolutely amazing."

Katohora has also written a screenplay for a lesbian comedy of errors, because, "I think we have enough brilliant, intense serious dark lesbian films, how about something lighthearted?"

"I have seen every possible lesbian movie — almost," he continues. "I love Claire of the Moon, one of the earliest lesbian films. Loved it. Everything was good in that film — performances, locales, production values ... I really enjoyed Saving Face. What a beautiful story, at so many levels. Imagine Me & You was very cute, and obviously my mentor Deepa Mehta's Fire. Intense."

Shooting on Come to My Window is nearly complete, and the film should be ready for festival submissions by October.

I'm torn

I heard that When Kiran Met Karen was HORRIBLE.  I don't really have high expectations for this film...hopefully it won't totally suck :/

"I heard that When Kiran Met Karen was HORRIBLE."

WHO DID YOU HEAR THAT FROM? I  mean really now do you expect us to go by this phantom film critique you are offering?

Nonetheless I am not interested in this movie because well they are no Lisa Ray or Sheetal Seth so for me the magnetism isn't there. Nor are the aesthetics and I am all about "the pretty".  If I want to see plain Janes I will just watch American media.

Shallow? Yes, I know but honoring beauty has never been AfterEllen's strongest point.

I saw When Kiran Met Karen

I saw When Kiran Met Karen for its US premier last year. The director, actors, etc. were all there. Having not seen much bollywood, I couldn't determine how I felt about it...what was with the purple skies?  I applaud him for making movies with lesbian characters and plot lines, but I didn't feel the characters had that chemistry (al la Sheetal and Lisa) nor that I felt for the characters. However, all that said, I will watch this movie, the legal way, as I believe we need to put our lesbian dollars to work and support what does come out. Money is the only way I am ever gonna see my relationship on the big screen. Each time I see a movie I don't particularly like, I think about the movies that stirred something inside of me. Money may be an issue but good acting and directing really help the film.

Plain Janes?

@SapphicDayTo each their own I guess, but I'm looking at that picture, and I think those two co-stars are GORGEOUS, and I'm talking extremely superficially, having not seen the film or met the people. If those two are plain Janes, you must live in a rarefied world indeed.

hah

Tru dat.  Having a good soul is important but if there's no initial attraction, there's nothing physically hot about you...sorry but it's not going to happen. (getting smashed in the face tomorrow- hello karma)

I'm all about empowering women but sometimes I just want to be shallow and watch a lezzie movie with some hot chicks. The lead looks real life cute but not movie cute.

hmm...

sounds interesting, but with the title alone, i can't help but laugh at it's cheesiness and then make innapropriate jokes about it.

There is no way I could trust someone who loved 'Claire of the Moon'.  What a god awful movie that was.

I do like Alison Hight's nose though.

Oh HUGE ditto. Claire of the Moon is an absolute shocker.  If that's the indication of his standards, I'll be giving his work a wide berth.

Are you'll crazy!!! Claire of the Moon was great for it's time.. in fact I'll say it was great period especially with all the crappy lez movies these days.. And I don't care who writes the movies as long as it is well done and realistic to me, I'm good.. All the good lez movies are coming from Europe anyway:ALL
