Arbitrary Cut-Off Points ?????

Well what's the cut-off point? How 'non-white' must they be? By 'women of colour', I hardly jump to the idea of 'Salma Hayek'. But I mean, if she counts, then how bout Cameron Diaz? I get the feeling people would be against that one. And while we're talking mixed race, I'm sure Halle Berry counts....yes? So why Halle and not Cameron? Because one's paler? Do we start counting southern Italians but not Northern one's because they're too 'white'?

I know I'm over-thinking this one but all I'm saying is that this is very ambiguous and I don't really like the idea of segregating people on the basis of 'type of appearance' as if there are different standards of beauty that should be alternately applied to different racial groups.

Ok, off to take my chill pill.

I see your point about the segregation. I think when you don't define it though, many of the women mentioned on people's lists would not get their far shot on the strength that Women of Color aren't as mainstream as many of the women who most people don't think of as "color" its all relative to interpretation and preception. So by making such a list people who wouldn't usually get mentioned do :o)

Also... kinda defining color, Cameron Diaz isn't consider "color" because she hasn't had to live her life under that umbrella as an assumption Halle Berry has. Writer's don't rewrite parts for the character's ethnicity to fit accordingly to Camreon Diaz. So while "unfair" to not include her on this women of color list because of the shade of her skin, its only right because OF the shade of her skin.

Sorry Cam... you make women who can sit on my face list ;o)

Don't expect me to have done any research on this but...

I think Cameron Diaz is white. There's a wikipedia page called something like 'White Hispanics', that is people who are ethnically white but hail from (or have ancestry in) Central and South American countries. I'm talking about Julie Gonzales, Alexis Bledel etc, etc. I think, in terms of being Cuban-American Cameron Diaz falls into this camp. So she would not be considered a 'Woman of Colour'.
