Some people think Meryl Streep can't compete with Jessica Rabbit

There is something about December that makes people want to make lists. Empire magazine started the snowball yesterday with 100 Greatest Movie Characters.

If you peruse their list, I think you'll notice something very similar about most of the characters: testosterone. Yes, out of 100 characters, only 12 are women. And of those 12 women, one is a cartoon character. Apparently, inexplicably, this list was voted on by the public.

Here's a look at the ladies who made the cut:

97. Clarice Starling (Jodie Foster), The Silence of the Lambs

91. Scarlet O'Hara (Vivien Leigh), Gone With the Wind

90. The Wicked Witch of the West (Margaret Hamilton), The Wizard of Oz

89. Princess Leia (Carrie Fisher), Star Wars

87. Jessica Rabbit (voiced by Kathleen Turner), Who Framed Roger Rabbit?

75. Marge Gunderson (Frances McDormand), Fargo

66. The Bride (Uma Thurman), Kill Bill Vol. 1 & 2

62. Mathilda (Natalie Portman), Leon

56. Juno Macguff (Ellen Page), Juno

45. Amelie Poulain (Audrey Tautou), Amelie

41. Mary Poppins (Julie Andrews), Mary Poppins

9. Ellen Ripley (Sigourney Weaver), Alien 1-4 … continue reading

Women in the White House: You decide

If you're outside the United States — or living in a news vacuum — you might have missed that today is Iowa caucus day. That means that Iowa Republicans will be casting ballots, Iowa Democrats will be standing in different parts of a room and, by the end of the day, we'll be that much closer to knowing who the next woman in the White House will be. This year is exciting because we usually don't get to vote for the woman in the White House.

The closest we've gotten so far is Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, who's two heartbeats away from the Presidency. Of course, as Sarah pointed out last summer, we do have celluloid depictions of women who rule. And we all know that fictional leaders are often more appealing than the real deal. (President Bartlett, anyone?) So, let's see how the real prospects stand up against the fictional. In true Iowa-caucus fashion, pick a candidate, stand in her corner and see if you can convince others to join you.

Madame President

1. Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton

Why you should stand in her corner: She's the first female Presidential candidate to have an actual chance of winning. At the Visible Vote forum, she told us, “I'm your girl.” She supports the repeal of “Don't Ask, Don't Tell” and is in favor of civil unions. She is a real-life person.

Why you should stand elsewhere: She doesn't support same-sex marriage “yet.” Lots of people hate her, and some believe that makes her unelectable. … continue reading

Casting an all-female "Star Trek": Make it so.

If you’re ever at a Star Trek convention and things get a little boring, here are six words guaranteed to stir the pot. “Best Star Trek captain ever. Discuss.” Entire websites are devoted to the Kirk vs. Picard debate, and it’s not a subject that Trekkies take lightly. Here at AfterEllen.com, however, no discussion is necessary. The best Star Trek captain is obvious.

News of Star Trek XI, directed by J.J. Abrams, has fueled new debate, since the movie’s storyline is a prequel to the original series and requires casting younger versions of Kirk & crew. Our own globalgrrl had a Psychic Friends moment when she correctly put Zoë Saldana in the role of Uhura.

That got me thinking: If an AfterEllen.com woman can cast a part so perfectly, imagine the lineup if AfterEllen.com cast an entire Star Trek film. Especially if the film had an all-female cast. Now we’re talking. I can almost see the marquee. “AfterEllen.com presents: Star Trek L: Revenge of the Manatees.” … continue reading

Paula Marshall gets nipped, tucked and killed

Paula Marshall, otherwise known as foxy lesbian daughter Regina on the great-but-canceled Out of Practice, will appear in four episodes of Nip/Tuck next season as Sean McNamara's love interest. I can't think of a bigger waste of her talent — not to mention her foxiness. And that's definitely a step down in terms of costars, though almost anything would be after you've worked with Stockard Channing. … continue reading
