Famous women have feelings, too

Popcrunch has created a list of famous people who have gone on the record about suffering with depression. The list included more than 100 people from all walks of life: politics, Hollywood, sports, journalism, anthropology, etc. For our purposes here, I’m interested in the women on the list.

Now, some of these women were pretty obvious candidates — I think we all had a hunch Sylvia Plath wasn’t happy every day — but others caught me by surprise and, again, illustrated what we all sort of know: that depression hits anyone, regardless of status, success, talent, smarts, looks, fame, love or lack thereof. Getting depressed is starting to feel like a given in the world today. I mean, times are bad: We’ve been at war for several years. Gas costs too much. It’s hectic out there. We’d be mad not to get sad.

The key, obviously, is dealing with our depression healthily. Talking to friends works for some of us, or sometimes journaling or jogging. Some of us need counseling at times, and despite what Tom Cruise says, medication can help sometimes, too.

It’s important to know that were not alone, and that some of our heroes have been depressed. Several of the people who are responsible for our favorite books, songs, and films, even. (Hey, isn’t it ironic that some of the people we turn to when we’re depressed get down, too?) Here are a few wonderful everyday women who get the blues:

—Politicians, their spouses, and sex scandal partners (regardless of party affiliations): Tipper Gore, Barbara Bush, Betty Ford, Monica Lewinsky, Marilyn Monroe

—Royalty who may or may not have despised each other: Princess Di, Queen Elizabeth II

—Athletes who grunt while playing and/or had a trend-setting hairdo in the 1970s: Monica Seles, Dorothy Hamill

—Women who sing about sad stuff: Shirley Manson of Garbage, Amy Lee of Evanescence, Sinead O’ Connor

—Women who sing about happy stuff: Sheryl Crow, Melanie C

—Women who sing about hot stuff: Donna Summer

—Women who sing about the importance of holding on: Carnie Wilson … continue reading

Trailers: "Speed Racer," "Dark Matter," "Stop-Loss"

I'm not ready to commit to an entire movie for the weekend, so I thought I'd check out some trailers instead.

First, the new Speed Racer trailer surfaced this week. If Christina Ricci and Susan Sarandon weren't enough reason to see this one, this trailer has convinced me that it's worth the ticket price. Moviefone.com desribes it as "Andy Warhol meets the Jetsons." Nice!

(Watch it in hi-def here.)

Next, I hadn't even heard of Dark Matter, starring Meryl Streep, Aidan Quinn and Liu Ye.

The film tells the story of a Chinese science student who can't quite cope with the pressures of American academia. … continue reading

TV alerts: "New Amsterdam," Christina Ricci, Dee Dee Myers

I think I'm still in writers' strike mode, because I am inordinately excited every time I hear about a new episode or a new show. Tonight brings the premiere of New Amsterdam, a Fox sci-fi/crime drama about an immortal cop. The cop is played by Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, about whom I have no opinion. Alexie Gilmore and Zuleikha Robinson co-star. They're hot.

Since the unsung Life is not likely to return, I have to get my cop fix somewhere, so I might give New Amsterdam a try.

Meanwhile, Christina Ricci and Dee Dee Myers stop by The Late Late Show With Craig Ferguson. The former will discuss the widely panned Penelope, while the latter will promote her book Why Women Should Rule the World. Perfect for a big presidential Tuesday!

Tattoos are hot — here's proof

Recently, I have been contemplating getting another tattoo. After all, it has been scientifically proven that they are hot. Before I get inked, however, there are two things I have to decide on first: the design and the placement.

Now you see why I am holding out. There is nothing worse than a bad tattoo.

Let's be real, though: The design options are endless; the placement options are not. And what better way to decide where to permanently mark my body than by looking to celebrities for guidance? It seems to be the trend.

First, there's the old-school armband that Pamela Anderson made popular.

Her thoughts on body art?

"Tattoos are like stories — they're symbolic of the important moments in your life. Sitting down, talking about where you got each tattoo and what it symbolizes, is really beautiful."

But what exactly does barbed wire symbolize? Oh, right: There was that 1996 movie written by someone named Ilene Chaiken. But I digress.

Moving on, I present to you arms and wrists.

Clockwise from top left: Winona Ryder, Jessica Alba, Alanis Morissette and Tegan and Sara.

(See more of Tegan and Sara's tattoos here.)

Of course, I could follow the examples of Megan Fox, Alyssa Milano and Christina Ricci and choose the back of my shoulder. … continue reading

Movie poster roundup: "Get Smart," "Mamma Mia!" and more

I'm once again brain-dead on a Monday, so I thought I'd post some pretty posters.

Get Smart (Anne Hathaway) — She gets smarter in every version of the poster.

The Forbidden Kingdom — A Jackie Chan movie, but I'll be focused on these two.

Jolene — No, it's not based on the Dolly Parton song, sadly. No matter how much the poster may seem to suggest that. … continue reading

"Speed Racer" trailer: CGI in high gear

When a group of guys is huddled around a computer oohing and ahhing, it can mean only one thing: cars. You thought I was going to say porn, didn't you? Well, that's what I expected when I sneaked up behind them, hoping for a peek of something naughty. Instead, I saw this.

It's the car Speed's rival, Racer X, will be driving in the movie Speed Racer. In case you care, the car is modeled after ARTA's Super GT 300 car. That means absolutely nothing to me, but now you know. And just so your day will be complete, here's what Speed will be driving.

Since my main requirement for a car is leather seats, I'm much more interested in the movie itself, which stars, among other people, Christina Ricci, Susan Sarandon and John Goodman.

"Penelope": Christina Ricci has a nose for the bizarre

Christina Ricci has done several odd little movies. It has made me wonder if her time as Wednesday Addams perhaps twisted her psyche. Or maybe it was her early exposure to Cher and Winona Ryder in Mermaids that gave her a warped view of the world.

It's not that I'm complaining. I happen to like the sometimes peculiar movie choices that accompany her apparently warped world view. I love that she's all over the map in what she does, from Monster to Speed Racer and The Opposite of Sex to Sleepy Hollow. She's the actress least likely to get sucked into a romantic comedy rut. Of course, that's not to say she can't do romantic comedy. In fact, she has. But, Christina Ricci being Christina Ricci, her romantic comedy choice isn't exactly what you would call typical.

Since 2006, a movie called Penelope has been making the festival rounds with little fanfare. The lack of attention is surprising, considering the cast includes not only Ricci, but also Catherine O'Hara, James McAvoy and Reese Witherspoon. … continue reading

"Speed Racer" has a girlfriend, and her name is Christina Ricci

That's right, race fans. When the live-action version of Speed Racer hits the big screen during next summer's blockbuster season, Christina Ricci will be a part of the action.

For those of you not familiar with the premise, Speed Racer was originally a Japanese animated television series in the 1960s. In 1967, the 52 episodes were dubbed into English and sent into syndication. The series follows the exploits of Speed Racer as he attempts to gain fame and fortune on the racing circuit while avoiding villains, including the mysterious Racer X. Speed is helped along in his quest for glory by his parents, Mom and Pops Racer; his best friend and mechanic, Sparky; and his loyal and tough girlfriend, Trixie.

In the movie version, Ricci plays Trixie. The rest of the cast includes Emile Hirsch as Speed, Susan Sarandon as Mom Racer, John Goodman as Pops Racer, and Lost boy Matthew Fox as Racer X, who just happens to be Speed's long-lost brother Rex Racer. The film is written and directed by Andy and Larry Wachowski. Yes, that's right, the same boys who brought us Bound, The Matrix, and V for Vendetta decided it was time to make a movie their nieces and nephews could watch. … continue reading

Mischa and Christina, silver belles

Today in Berlin, Christina Ricci and Mischa Barton attended the Hugo Boss fashion show (part of Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Berlin). Clearly they both got the memo about wearing silver:

‎Christina Ricci gets naked for the press

Christina Ricci seems to love naked discussion. It all started when she was promoting the United States release of Black Snake Moan back in March. Then, she told Entertainment Weekly about how she would stay in character — and without clothes — on set.

“Sam [co-star Samuel L. Jackson] would be like, 'Put some clothes on!' 'I was like, 'No, you don't understand. I'm doing something important.'”

Uh, taking off your clothes is important? Well, maybe to bathe. Or to swim. Or to participate in other extracurricular activities. But on a film set, I’m pretty sure the only people who think it’s important are the gaffers and production assistants who finally get to see a piece of the action, so to speak. … continue reading

Now, just in time for the United Kingdom release Friday of the Southern gothic howler, Christina is back with the naked talk.
