Gaming is for Girls: PETA for your PC

Fastest-selling PC game ever — "Wrath of the Lich King"
Blizzard Entertainment is once again laughing all the way to the bank as the new expansion of the "World of Warcraft" universe smashes sales records. The second expansion in the series, "Wrath of the Lich King," has sold more than 2.8 million copies in its first 24 hours of availability, making it the fastest-selling PC game of all time (according to internal company records and reports).

The record was previously held by Blizzard, when the first "World of Warcraft" expansion, "The Burning Crusade," sold around 2.4 million copies in a 24-hour period. It seems Blizzard can do little wrong with this cash cow.

"GTA IV" episodic content announced
Xbox 360 owners with a penchant for Liberty City, this post is for you. Rockstar has announced the first downloadable content pack for GTA IV, in the form of "The Lost and Damned." Hero of the piece (because, let's face it, a virtual gaming environment this macho has no place for a female hero) is Johnny Klebitz, a member of the Liberty City biker gang, The Lost. Apparently Niko will make an appearance, but merely as a peripheral character. … continue reading

Joan Jett wants to convert you

PETA has enlisted several celebrities for its advertisements, hoping to convert both celebs and civilians into herbivores. Joan Jett, a dedicated vagitarian vegetarian is the latest to give her "Veggie Testimonial" on the organization's website.

Has she converted you? (To being a vegetarian, I mean.) OK, so maybe you love your turkey on Thanksgiving, but you can still appreciate she stands for something. Although I must say, using Joan's face and body is false advertising: No one but her can look that good at her age — vegetarian or otherwise. Results not typical! … continue reading

Amanda Beard bares it all for PETA

Just as the Olympic machine was revving up, swimmer Amanda Beard and beach volleyball player Kerri Walsh released PSAs for two different non-profit organizations. Beard bared all for the animal rights group PETA, and Walsh struck that pose every single one of you have come to love for UNTIL, an AIDS awareness organization.

Beard launched her PETA anti-fur campaign inside the athletes' village in Beijing, causing quite a stir. Of China's fur industry, she said:

I have seen a lot of the videos, and [it] brings me to tears. What [some people] think is pretty is actually something that's very gruesome and gross.

Unfortunately for Beard, that was the only noise she was able to make in the 2008 Beijing Games. She came in 18th in the 200m breast stroke, failing to make it past the preliminary rounds. … continue reading

Alicia Silverstone, vegging out naked

Alicia Silverstone is showing skin instead of eating it. The long-time vegetarian is appearing au naturel in a new PETA campaign promoting vegetarianism. I have to say, if this is what happens when you eat your veggies, someone pass the broccoli.

The former Clueless star takes it all off in a new TV ad that began airing today in Houston and Dallas (picked because they rank among the least healthy cities in the United States; sorry, Texans) and will expand cross-country later. The spot features a naked Silverstone emerging from a pool and slinking around while extolling the benefits of meat-free living. “There is nothing in the world that has changed me as much as this. I feel so much better and have so much more energy,” she says. “It’s so amazing.”
