MTV web series helps college student say, "I'm gay"

As we mentioned in Best. Lesbian. Week. Ever. last week, there's a new interactive web series called How Do I Say This? I'm Gay on the mtvU website. The project was inspired by an email from Lilly, a college student seeking advice on how to come out to her family. Here's a snippet from her email:

"I’m in college and about to go off to my second year. That’s not the problem. I’m gay, and that’s not a problem either, it’s that I don’t know how to tell my mom and dad. I can go off to school and be who I really am, but I don’t want to have to hide it from my family."

Readers respond via video clips and images — so far the responses include a coming-out story in which "gay" is distinguished from "eccentric," and an animated short that captures the concept of taking "baby steps."

Take a look at this clip, in which a reader describes one of those awkward mom moments: … continue reading

The "Greek" Girls' Guide to Sleeping Your Way Through College

I just finished watching the Tivo'd fourth episode ("Picking Teams") of ABC Family's Greek, and I'm so appalled, I had to blog about it. (Kinda like when something tastes really bad, and you say "ooh, this tastes gross, try it!")

When Greek debuted last month, I was pleasantly surprised at how decently it was written, how frankly it portrayed college life, and the fact that it included a well-adjusted black gay character. I wasn't overly impressed with the show's three lead female characters — Casey (Spencer Grammer), her best friend Ashleigh (Amber Stevens), and her arch-nemesis Rebecca (Dilshad Vadsaria) — who seemed like stereotypes of bitchy, backstabbing sorority girls, but I was willing to give the show the benefit of the doubt, especially because it was created by a gay man, Sean Smith.

The second and third episodes came and went, and the girls (and I use that term deliberately here, since that's how they're depicted) didn't get any better.

Casey and Amber discuss sex and infidelity (for a change)

Then came Monday night, and the infamous fourth episode.

The boys spent the episode discussing physics, drinking beer, playing floor hockey, and struggling with whether to come out to the fraternity.

The girls spent the episode having sex, scheming to have sex, or thinking up ways to use sex as a weapon. Oh, wait, I'm sorry: and drinking beer. … continue reading

College drama "The Best Years" starts tonight on The N

Tonight at 8:30, after the premiere of the second half of Degrassi's sixth season, The N is debuting the college drama The Best Years. It's getting pretty good reviews so far.

The New York Times said the show "immerses itself so deeply in the pits of class warfare that its characters might as well be carrying cans of mace." And they mean this in a good way.

"This show’s radical idea," summarizes the Times reviewer, "is to depict a world closer to the one we inhabit than the one we pretend to live in: a place where money and provenance really are untrumpable determinants of the social order."

Class warfare on a college campus? I'm in! Here's a look at the cast:

Here's the description of the show from its official site: … continue reading
