What would Alien 5 be without aliens? Honestly, I could care less, as long as Sigourney Weaver has the same costume designer she had in the other films.

Although I think Weaver could never be, um, overexposed, Weaver herself thinks that fans may be tired of Alien’s aliens. In a recent interview with the MTV Movies blog, she said that she and Ridley Scott, director of Alien, have talked about the possibility of returning to the franchise for a story focused on main character Ellen Ripley.

“There’s definitely uncharted territory for Ripley,” she said. “Both [Ridley and I] feel a kind of commitment to that woman.” So do I, Sigourney; so do I.

The commitment doesn’t extend, however, to the creature that gave Ripley so much trouble over the years. “We’d have to go back to the drawing board on [the alien],” she said. “Ridley said that right away when we first talked about [a fifth film].” … continue reading

Toy maker Todd McFarlane and filmmaker Josh Olson just announced that they are undertaking a new version of The Wizard of Oz (not to be confused with the Sci Fi Channel's Tin Man). Although Wicked has earned quite a reputation, neither Diana Ross nor the Muppets could save previous Oz Redux attempts, so my initial reaction to this was skepticism.

Reading on, I wavered between intrigued (Oz as "dark, edgy and muscular"), relieved (Dorothy will not be "some bondage queen," a la McFarlane's disturbing dolls) and bored (the film will aim to capture Lord of the Rings fans). Then I got to the description of Dorothy as less "helpless singing girl" and more Ellen Ripley.
