Sheryl Crow rocks the vote

Attention voters of America: Sheryl Crow will sing to you for free — if you can get your voting-resistant friends to register. Well OK, she won’t be performing a private concert in your living room or anything, but she will be giving away her new album, Detours, to the first 50,000 people who register three friends at Rock the Vote.

Crow has been involved with Rock the Vote since its inception 18 years ago. Her new album fits perfectly with this giveaway because the songs are about the war in Iraq, the environment and Hurricane Katrina. Crow hopes it will promote awareness of these matters and at the same time hopes her gratis contribution will tempt people into registering.

Sheryl has made the process of winning her album very simple. Go to the Rock the Vote’s website, log in and rat out invite three people whom you know are not rocking their rights at the polls to sign up to vote. If all three of them accept your invite and register, then you are the price of a CD richer. Don’t you just love democracy?

So right now you might be saying, Reese, I don’t know anybody that’s over the age of 18 and not registered to vote — can I get some free Sheryl Crow music anyway? And I say to you, yes! Those already registered can head to the website and sign in to get a free download of Sheryl’s new politically-inspired song, Gasoline. You can add it to your Election Day playlist and listen to it while you are claiming your political voice and voting for our next president. … continue reading

Christina Aguilera takes on the Rolling Stones

When I first heard that Christina Aguilera was going to be singing a duet with Mick Jagger in Shine a Light, the new Martin Scorsese documentary about the Rolling Stones that premieres on Friday, I immediately wondered, "Why Christina?"

I felt a little better about my own confusion when I read that Stones guitarist Keith Richards was confused as well. At the live performance when the footage for the documentary was filmed, Richards apparently thought Christina was just some young female fan that had gotten through security and onto the stage!

But I imagine that with Keith Richards' youthful and not so youthful indulgences, many things in life are now rather confusing for him. So learning of his confusion didn't help me justify my own. … continue reading

Immortalized (and creepy) in wax

Yesterday, two new wax figures were unveiled at Madame Tussauds in London. The next time they visit the U.K., Drew Barrymore and Cameron Diaz can look into the abyss that is themselves sculpted in wax:

Eeek! Waxworks have always creeped me out, even before I'd seen House of Wax (BTW, the 1953 version is sooo much better than the 2005 remake). But because I sort of like to be creeped out, I considered this an opportunity to peruse some other photos of waxy celebrities.

Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama:

Those could come in handy when you're just sick of campaigning. Also, doesn't that look like a winning ticket? … continue reading

You named your baby what?

Over the weekend, not one, but two celebrities welcomed wee packages of joy into their lives. No, not that kind of wee package of joy, Lindsay Lohan. Geez, I thought you got that straightened out. Still, as word got out that Nicole Richie and Christina Aguilera had given birth, I braced for the inevitable. The inevitable being whatever wacky, weird thing they decided to name their kids. Like, say, Tundra or Unicorn or Suri.

Luckily, both Richie and Aguilera decided to go relatively restrained, with Harlow Winter Kate Madden (for Nicole’s little girl) and Max Liron Bratman (for Christina’s little boy).

But other celebrities have been considerably less, shall we say, discreet when naming their offspring. Pilot Inspektor? Fifi Trixibelle? Sage Moonblood? Moxie Crimefighter? (The bad parents being, respectively, Jason Lee, Bob Geldof, Sylvester Stallone and Penn Jillette.) Dudes, do you not love your children? … continue reading
