Pink

New Music Tuesday: 10-28-08

Something worth taking advantage of this week is M.I.A.'s new digital-only EP, How Many Votes, which is only on iTunes today through Nov. 3. After that, it will be available on other online outlets, but there will not be any hard copies to grab. Ironic how she's paired up with another "retired" rapper Jay-Z on the remixed track "Boyz."

Lady GagaThe Fame (Interscope Records)

The ambiguous singer has a style that others are catching on to (see: Christina Aguilera), and her single "Just Dance" was made for accompanying a night out. However, it seems like she might have lent her best songs to the Pussycat Dolls and New Kids on the Block and kept the leftovers for herself.

PinkFunhouse (LaFace Records)

Once you hear "So What," it's almost impossible to get out of your head — which means Pink is successful in creating a great single, yet again. The rest of the album follows suit, mixing R&B, rock and pop as the singer is able to do on every release. … continue reading

Celebrities that are not lesbians 4.0

When I first started this column, its purpose was to poke fun of celebrities who were a little too adamant in declaring their heterosexuality. In a time when Clay Aiken’s declaration that yes, he is indeed gay is met with a collective yawn, and when Ellen and Portia’s wedding is treated as nothing more than a typical celebrity wedding, there is no question that coming out as gay or lesbian in Hollywood is no longer a death knell or — in most circumstances — even considered scandalous enough to guarantee that the masses will whisper about you for more than five minutes.

But certain elements of the media never got the memo, and this time, we turn our attention to these stragglers.

Earlier this month, Eamonn Holmes (co-host of British television show This Morning) interviewed Salma Hayek. During the interview, Mr. Holmes mistakenly believed that Salma Hayek had come out of the closet, at least halfway. (And, no we do not mean by starring as bisexual artist Frida Kahlo in the film Frida.)

The 42-year-old Hollywood star had been trying to tell the This Morning presenter that she was half Lebanese. However, Eamonn misheard her and made an embarrassing gaffe, thinking that the Mexican-born actress had “outed” herself.

Belfast-raised Eamonn seemed to be struggling to understand the Ugly Betty star’s accent and thought she said she was half a lesbian after he commented on the origin of her surname. At the start of the interview he said: “Hayek doesn’t sound very Mexican.”

As she tried to explain that her father was Lebanese, Holmes quickly asked: “You’re a lesbian?” Seeing the funny side, Salma lent forward saying “Lebanese” very slowly. Mortified by his mistake, he replied: “Oh sorry. I thought you were half lesbian. Forgive me.”

What exactly is a “half lesbian”? … continue reading

Pink says "So What" to anyone who will listen

Pink is undeniably hot and vocally talented, but I can also appreciate that she never seems to take herself too seriously. Case-in-point, her new video for the single "So What." Based very concretely on her relationship and now divorce from motocrosser Carey Hart, the song details Pink's moving on. (The repeated chorus contains the lyrics, "So what? I'm still a rock star.")

A musician who isn't afraid to use real life as lyrical fodder, Pink took the idea of her broken relationship and its media attention and turned it into a rather hilarious video. She plays pranks involving urination and beer bottles and harasses some newlyweds. … continue reading

2008 Hot 100 Preview: PINK

What's so hot about Pink? It's almost easier to ask what's not hot about Pink (we've only got so much room on this blog, after all.)

Pink is a singer that can flawlessly reinvent her style (both musical and personal), and it's obvious that AfterEllen readers recognize she's also one tough broad (with the abs and arms to prove it.) … continue reading

Tattoos are hot — here's proof

Recently, I have been contemplating getting another tattoo. After all, it has been scientifically proven that they are hot. Before I get inked, however, there are two things I have to decide on first: the design and the placement.

Now you see why I am holding out. There is nothing worse than a bad tattoo.

Let's be real, though: The design options are endless; the placement options are not. And what better way to decide where to permanently mark my body than by looking to celebrities for guidance? It seems to be the trend.

First, there's the old-school armband that Pamela Anderson made popular.

Her thoughts on body art?

"Tattoos are like stories — they're symbolic of the important moments in your life. Sitting down, talking about where you got each tattoo and what it symbolizes, is really beautiful."

But what exactly does barbed wire symbolize? Oh, right: There was that 1996 movie written by someone named Ilene Chaiken. But I digress.

Moving on, I present to you arms and wrists.

Clockwise from top left: Winona Ryder, Jessica Alba, Alanis Morissette and Tegan and Sara.

(See more of Tegan and Sara's tattoos here.)

Of course, I could follow the examples of Megan Fox, Alyssa Milano and Christina Ricci and choose the back of my shoulder. … continue reading

Pink and Jackie Warner: Separated at birth?

During the American Idol results show this week, I caught a little bit of P!nk's performance. I couldn't believe how much she looked like Jackie Warner of Work Out.

Are they the same person? Has anyone ever seen them in the same place at the same time? This would explain so much. (Everything but P!nk's use of an exclamation point as a letter.) … continue reading

Tattooed ladies (surprisingly, none named Lydia)

by Dorothy Snarker

The tattooed lady has been turning heads since long before Groucho Marx made Lydia the most famous one around. Before the lower back tattoo became the calling card of a generation of wannabe wild children, lesbians were rocking the ink with defiant flare. The tattoo even made No. 3 on the definitive list of Top 11 Lesbian Fashion Accessories (beaten only by the white ribbed tank top and the tie). But before we start a discourse on the geopolitical and sociological significance of tattoos on women, let's be honest with ourselves: They just look hot. Really, really hot. And on these ladies, they look even hotter.

With that, I give you my completely unscientific, but totally smoking, list of the Top 10 Tattooed Ladies.

10. Helen Mirren: The queen's got ink. The tattoo -- a small, interlaced symbol on her left hand -- is a remnant from her bad girl 20s when she "got very drunk on brandy and woke up with it the next day." I couldn't love her more.

9. Drew Barrymore: Doesn't part of you miss the old Drew? Sure, she is America's sweetheart now, but sometimes I long for the girl who would flash her tats — not to mention David Letterman — with pride.

8. Lena Headey: After Imagine Me & You made her every lesbian's favorite florist, fans were left wondering whether those tattoos were real. Turns out, yes. Yay for flower girls.

7. Eve: Placement is everything.

6. Amy Winehouse: Girl's got soul. And girl's also got naked girls tattooed onto her body. Works for me.
